Camping at Chaffee Dam.(Base Camp)

What to bring.  Important– Always adhere to the Club code of conduct.  You can download from the club website.

  • Always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back.
  • Agree on base camp or meeting point in case of emergency.
  • Give other people you are with contact details.  And what UHF Channel frequency.  Let me know if you are willing to share your contact details with fellow club members.  Kie.badcoe@bigpond.com
  • Bring your own first aid kit, Food and water.
  • Make sure your vehicle is in good working order.  Good spare wheel and tire kit.  Tools to change wheels and basic repairs.  Tape for quick emergency repairs e.g.  Bumper or wheel arch mouldings damaged by kangaroo can be temporarily taped up.  Leaky radiator pipe can be patched up.  Chewing gum for hole in petrol tank.  Jumper leads, Snatch strap.  Tire inflator. Spare fuses.  Vehicle and Van manual.
  • Spare battery in box to charge up your phone and tablet and detector batteries.  Spare batteries, for your hand held two way and GPS.  Flashlight and or headlamp. Whistle.
  • Backpack to keep your water, gloves and other supplies in when you go away from your campsite.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and shoes.  Spare clothing.  Night could be cold so be prepared for that.
  • As we will be in areas detecting, it is recommended you have some Gaiters to help prevent snake bites.
  •             Campfire.  Heed fire warnings and fire bans.  No fires during bans.  Bring your own firewood and Chair!  A small chair/stool or milk crate to sit on while panning!

PANNING Tools to bring if you have them:

This is a pretty comprehensive list.

You really just need a Gold Pan, Shovel, Scoop and suction bottle.

  • ESSENTIAL: Gold Pan
  • Bucket for soil.  (See Bunnings for a bucket)
  •           A shovel is VERY useful. (see Bunnings)
  •           A Crevicing tool (a long, flat-tipped screwdriver is popular)
  • A small plastic trowel with a narrow tip.  (see Bunnings)
  •           Possibly a pick but not essential.
  • A magnifier or Jeweller’s Loupe – see or eBay or Amazon)
  •           Rubber Boots (gumboots) are great – (see Bunnings)
  •           A suction bottle for getting your gold out of the pan.
  • A specimen container or bottle to display your gold.
  • A bottle of cheap Liquid Glycerine (available at all Chemists for $5.95).  (This is to keep the water in your display bottle from going mouldy).
  • Some people like to modify a Yabby Pump to suck gold out of crevices.  (see Fishing stores or BCF)

Can of Bushman’s Insect Repellent (avail at most Chemists for $8 [small] and $10 [large]).

  •           Sunscreen and a hat or cap for sun protection.
  • Mini Gold Concentrator Bucket (optional but can be useful here) – (see Miners Den Sydney)

Metal Detecting tools to bring if you have them:

  • Metal Detector (essential!) – (see Miners Den web site)
  •           Prospector’s Pick – (see Miners Den)
  •           Small Plastic Trowel.  (see Bunnings)
  •           Can of Bushman’s Insect Repellent (avail at most Chemists for $8 [small] and $10 [large]).
